The Stack is running a weekly business technology vendor news round-up: updates, minus the padding. Here's the tech vendor news that caught our attention this week across the enterprise space. (Updated every Friday).

Week commencing March 7, 2022

Palo Alto Networks' new Prisma Cloud Supply Chain Security aims to provide insight into software supply chain vulnerabilities and misconfigurations for cloud-native apps. It offers auto-discovery, code repository scanning, branch protection rules, graph visualisation, and the ability to fix issues with a consolidated pull request. More info here.

Lenovo has launched a line of entry-level servers, aimed at medium-sized enterprises and designed to work with the firm’s IT-as-a-service storage and security products. The ThinkSystem V2 servers are all single-socket, with tower and rack-mount options available. Alongside these are Lenovo’s ThinkSystem storage and professional services tokens.

Nvidia has snapped up Israeli software-defined storage provider Excelero. The firm’s NVMesh software manages arrays of flash drives, making it available as block storage across public and private clouds. Excelero CEO Yaniv Romem said his firm’s expertise would add to Nvidia’s HPC and AI platforms. More from Nvidia here.

In major tech vendor news, Microsoft has finally completed its $19.7 billion acquisition of Nuance, a conversational AI firm, which the pair first announced last April. Redmond’s largest acquisition since LinkedIn, it hopes Nuance will boost its AI abilities, particularly in healthcare and customer service. More details from Microsoft.

CDN provider Limelight is buying Edgecast from Yahoo!, creating a new company to be known as Edgio. The firm will offer edge computing services around the world, and its combined network capacity is 200Tbps. Limelight and Edgecast currently boast clients including BT, Amazon, Disney, Sony, Twitter, Microsoft and Tik Tok. Yahoo! will own 31.9% of Edgio, according to its announcement.

Fibre infrastructure provider Glide will link its ultrafast dark fibre network to Proximity Data Centre’s new Birmingham colocation site. This will give the Proximity site access to Glide’s 30km fibre ring around Britain’s second-largest city, and enable low-latency services for a wide range of customers across the Midlands, according to Proximity.

The Uptime Institute is working with Google, Meta and Microsoft to launch the Data Center Career Pathfinder, an online tool listing hundreds of career possibilities in datacentre infrastructure around the world. The firm says it is not a job site, but a tool designed to help IT professionals find suitable roles, and also address the datacentre skills shortage.

Tech vendor news week commencing February 28, 2022

Snowflake announced its planned acquisition of Streamlit for a reported $800 million. Streamlit is a Python framework that lets data scientists build interactive dashboards and machine learning web apps with no front-end web development experience. The company claims that it has seen 8 million downloads and more than 1.5 million applications built using the Streamlit framework -- and is actively deployed at over half the Fortune 50.

Motorola Solutions agreed to buy Ava Security, a global provider of cloud-native video security and analytics, based in London. The company platform lets users access, search and manage their entire video security system from a centralised dashboard, and Ava Security boasts that its "self-learning" algorithms also enhance enterprise security by detecting abnormal behavior and alerting operators to events in real-time. CrowdStrike has launched Falcon Identity Threat Protection Complete, a fully cloud-based managed service to help organisations detect and eliminate identity-based intrusions and attacks. “The solution combines CrowdStrike’s leading Falcon Identity Threat Protection solution with the expertise of the Falcon Complete team, which manages and actively monitors Falcon solutions for customers, investigating and surgically remediating incidents in minutes,” said the firm in its product datasheet.

AWS has created a carbon footprint tool, allowing its customers to calculate the environmental impact of their AWS loads. Users can measure “historical carbon emissions, evaluate emission trends as their use of AWS evolves, approximate the estimated carbon emissions they have avoided by using AWS instead of an on-premises data center, and review forecasted emissions based on current use,” said AWS. The tool is available now in the AWS Billing console.

Hitachi Vantara has launched a new set of hybrid cloud products including a tool that extends its virtual storage platform to cloud native applications, an on-prem platform to manage public cloud workloads and AI-optimised cloud-based reporting and analytics via its Hitachi Application Reliability Centers.

Cradlepoint unveiled its Cellular Intelligence suite, aimed at simplifying deployment and management of WANs. Cellular Intelligence includes live stats, integrated SIM management, signal mapping, software-driven modem functionality, cellular-optimised SD-WAN and more. Cradlepoint cites an IDC study suggesting 65% of organisations will “untether” their operations by 2024.

Tech vendor news week commencing February 21, 2022

AWS has added Amazon S3 to the set of supported services in AWS Backup. (That this is a new service may surprise some...) AWS Backup for Amazon S3 lets users centrally manage backups and restores of S3 bucket contents across all AWS accounts. Users can create periodic and/or continuous backups of S3 bucket contents, incl. object data, object tags, access control lists, other user-defined metadata. Details here.

Cloudflare has agreed to acquire Area 1 Security -- an anti-phishing and email security specialist, saying "Area 1 has been in the email security space for nine years, and they have amassed an incredibly valuable trove of threat intelligence data. In addition, they have used this data to train state-of-the-art machine learning models to act preemptively against threats." The deal is expected to close in Q2. Blog.

Dell has launched Dell PowerVault ME5, a series of three new entry storage models ranging from 2PB to 6PB capacity that are purpose-built and optimized for SAN & DAS. Prices range from $15k-$50k. Their design is suited to "a broad set of application workloads including High Performance Computing File Systems with BeeGFS, PixStore and NFS file systems, Safety and Security (CCTV at the Edge), Microsoft and VMware Virtualization, up to 500 Virtual Desktops, select Edge use cases" (O&G exploration and cloud gaming) Dell said.

Equinix expanded its Network Edge services -- already available in the UK -- to five new European markets: France, Finland, Ireland, Italy and Sweden. The offering comprises virtual network services that run on a modular Equinix infrastructure platform; the idea is to allow users to scale network services from the core to the edge without the need for any CapEx, or additional physical hardware or equipment.  Learn more here.

Infosys has launched a "metaverse foundry". President Ravi Kumar said, “The physical and virtual worlds are already smoothly and ubiquitously interwoven. The metaverse will deepen this overlap and in very experiential ways that will create abundant space for business innovation. We want to help our clients to quickly double down on those opportunities in a find-fast, learn-faster environment." Promotions came via video.

Radisys, an open telecommunications technology provider, has launched its "Connect RAN" 5G IoT software stack; a cloud-based 5G software suite with options to integrate on cloud and hardware for OEMs. The company aims to support diverse IoT use cases from battery device-driven deployments like metering and asset tracking through to ultra-low latency, time-sensitive industrial deployments. thatDot, an event stream processing software specialist, released Quine -- an open source tool freely available on GitHub designed to combine complex event streaming and graph data technologies for data pipeline engineers. Those building event-driven applications may want to take a looks. Current use cases include CDN cache efficiency analysis and Kubernetes event observability, among others. GitHub repo is here.

MongoDB invested in Apollo GraphQL -- an open source and commercial GraphQL technology specialist that claims more than 17 million monthly open source downloads and more than 10 billion daily queries run on the Apollo graph. The investment was announced as part of MongoDB's launch of a new strategic investment fund, "MongoDB Ventures". It also invested in data discovery and intelligence platform BigID.

Couchbase announced Couchbase Mobile 3, a platform for mobile developers and edge architects to build apps in the cloud, at the edge and on mobile and IoT devices. The platform includes enhancements to the Couchbase Lite embedded noSQL DB and Sync Gateway products for mobile and edge and adds a C API for Couchbase Lite and a secure RESTful API endpoint to simplify runtime administration. The platform allows easy data storage, access, sync, and security from the cloud to the edge to the device. Couchbase boasts that it provides "offline-first capabilities for applications that [ensure] data integrity by automatically synchronizing data across the entirety of an organization’s edge and mobile infrastructure, with or without internet connectivity."
