What went wrong with New Zealand's $33 million cloud acceleration project?

Project spurred by disaster Teams call was "slush fund for unrelated IT expenses"

Despite spending over $33 million on its cloud acceleration programme, New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has reportedly fallen short of its goals.

The project, first approved in 2021, was expected to cost $13.8 million and aimed to modernise MFAT's workplace. Its goals included migrating services to the cloud and migrating compute out of legacy software.

Unfortunately, many tech leaders will recognise some of the challenges faced during the project.
