Every week The Stack runs a “job of the week” feature – typically featuring CIO or equivalent roles, with a UK focus. This week our spotlight is on a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) role at insurance multinational AEGIS.
(Last week we also featured a C-Suite technology role at an insurance firm, with AIG actively seeking a UK CIO -- high-profile recruitment in this sector comes as KPMG notes than insurance firms are "making technology decisions quickly as they redefine their future state operating models" and sometimes struggling to do so...)
Chief Technology Officer Aegis London
The new CTO vacancy at AEGIS London is being offered under an 18-24 month fixed-term contract. The CTO's focus to "will be to keep AEGIS London secure, improve efficiency, continuously enhance service quality and reduce the operational risk profile while supporting new business initiatives and capitalizing on opportunities enabled by new technologies to differentiate AEGIS as a business within the insurance market" the company said.
AEGIS London is the UK-based subsidiary of AEGIS, a mutual insurance company that primarily serves the needs of the energy industry. AEGIS London operates Syndicate 1225 at Lloyd's and, having grown from its origins as an energy insurance specialist, now participates in a wide range of classes traditionally written in the Lloyd's market. The company employs some 150 people in London and expects to underwrite £918 million through 2021.
While the CTO will lead a significant digital transformation programme at the company, AEGIS London says it is seeking someone with "strong business acumen – a business and innovation mind-set rather than a purely technology one" along with the "ability to motivate and inspire the IT team and build a first-class IT function."
It adds: "Defining a new technology architecture for the business post a period of substantial growth will be a key dimension to this role. The CTO will also successfully implement AEGIS London's IT Transformation plans on time and within budget. This may entail moving all applications to the Cloud and enhancing the adoption of new ways of working within the business, including developing our digital offering..."
As Laura Hay, KPMG's Global Head of Insurance put it recently: "There is one characteristic that unites all the [Insurance] leaders I speak to: a sense of genuine urgency. Insurance CEOs recognize they can't wait any longer. There is no doubt that many insurers are walking a fine line between balancing the need to invest and the concerns around costs. However, they all know that their customers are already moving on without them. And they will need to work hard just to catch up. In this fight for survival, pace matters."
Taking on a role with these kinds of tailwinds is always exciting and the role looks to be a compelling one.
